boutique advice

I'm interviewing with a boutique bank with about 10 people. They do sell-side advisory for oil&gas properties (70%) and private placement and M&A (30%). They don't have analysts right now but the MD told me that they had analysts before and they were all promoted to VP. They do about 20 deals a year and have been around about 15 years. About 50% of the people at the firm have a petroleum engineering background.

This firm also has two separate private equity arms, which really interests me. Looking at the team they have some very qualified individuals from top Texas schools, but some are from non-targets as well. The private equity has people from mostly top-tier schools.

I'm just curious to see if you guys think this would be good experience for someone trying to enter finance. I currently work for a large oil company in a credit/risk analyst role.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Also, what type of compensation should I expect....

Sounds like a fantastic experience. If you close 20 deals a year (seems a bit high TBH), that's fantastic. I would suggest to prepare for your interview, to start reading up on the oil & gas industry, start reading annual reports on those companies, and know what M&A activity is happening in the industry. Knowing this is going to set you apart. This boutique seems like the real deal, your going to learn a ton by doing all the research, financial models, pitchbooks.

As for compensation, if they are closing 20 deals a year consistently, then expect a decent salary. What salary exactly? Who knows right?
