Bulge Bracket Corporate Banking to IB
I secured a Corporate Banking internship at a JPM/BofA/Citi–level bank, but I entered recruiting late and didn’t recruit for Investment Banking. From a career standpoint, Corporate Banking seems to have more limited exit opportunities, and candidly, parts of the work sound less interesting to me.
Given that, I’m trying to figure out whether it makes sense to push for a transition into Investment Banking. Is DCM typically the most realistic entry point, or is it better to move within the same coverage group? Also, how feasible is it to switch into a different coverage group than the one I’m in through Corporate Banking?
I understand this would require heavy networking and great job performance, but what other things would be evaluated?
Transitioning from Corporate Banking to Investment Banking (IB) is a well-trodden path, but it does require strategic planning and effort. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:
1. DCM as a Transition Point
2. Moving Within the Same Coverage Group
3. Switching to a Different Coverage Group
4. Key Factors Evaluated
5. Additional Tips
In summary, DCM is a realistic entry point, but moving within the same coverage group may offer a smoother transition. Switching to a different group is feasible with strong networking and demonstrated interest. Focus on excelling in your current role, building technical skills, and leveraging relationships to make the move.

If you’re in an industry coverage group going to industry IB is most straightforward actually and have seen it happen. I’ve also seen DCM for what it’s worth.
