Californians in NYC
For the Cali natives living in NYC, do you have any insight on differences in culture and people? Any tips or comments? Which coast do you prefer?

I'm a NYC guy in Cali ironicaly. The stereotypes of each place seem pretty true. I like the people in the west coast better but the culture / city of NY better.
L.A. weather is consistently around 77F, no humidity and sunny, because it's more or less like an oasis in a desert like setting with the ocean near by. NY weather is constantly changing and chaotic. Weather plays a big role on people's behavior. People I know from L.A. are generally chill and relaxed because they experience that same weather environment day in and day out...while people like me who grew up around NYC are a byproduct of their environment...neurotic, extremely fast paced, and impatient. While this isn't a truth, there's a high correlation.
i disagree with westcoasting.
i am from california, been going to school in nyc for 3.5 years now.
let me do some general comparisons: weather here sucks compared to cali there are a lot of attractive girls in ny, because its a capital of many industries, but your average girls are much better in cali. culture...theres culture here but there is also culture in cali. people here are always hurried, more rude, and less likely to talk to you on the street.
be prepared to 'chill' a lot less, hurry to places, and go through a period of homesickness. But its also fun here because there is always something to do at night, unlike the burbs in cali.
hope that made sense
I recently relocated to CA. I think folks put NYC on a pedastal. I agree with Westcoasting, I like the people in west coast better. Although there's definitely more to do in cities like NYC or Chicago, LA has its share of interesting hot spots :-)
I was in SF last weekend and it was considered cold by local natives. The nighttime lows were in the upper 30's and day time highs in the 60's. Now that's great weather in January. Plus, you have the mountains (skiing, hiking) within 3 hours drive, the ocean is less than an hour, and vegas is only an hour flight.
In LA, you have La Jolla (2 hour drive) to the south and Big Bear skiing (eh, maybe 2-3 hour?) drive to the north.
Ditto with SF... i.e. have Carmel and Lake Tahoe...
Listen, I was in La Jolla all day Saturday (2 hour drive from LA) and then I was at a 9 PM movie in LA the same day. Can't beat that!!
Besides, I'd rather do stuff outdoors, e.g. dinner al fresco, hiking, cycling, swimming, beach, skiing vs. going out clubbing in NYC any day.
It's a more comforting lifestyle...
I wanna live in LA for a couple of years, seems like my kinda place. Also, I've heard the broads are way better.
Don't even need to go as far as La Jolla.
Venice Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna, Malibu, etc. - you can live within walking distance or all less than an hour (from the Westside)
I've lived in San Diego for two years and after while, La Jolla gets kinda boring. It's still a great place but there's lots of nice places that are closer to LA.
Yes, 'tis true...
I wasn't in La Jolla for the beach... I was scalping an interior design store for 40% off on Baker, Bill Sofield furniture etc. :-)
To each his/her own, but I can't fucking stand those LA people with their "chill" attitudes and shit. Nothing is ever a big deal. That's why I generally don't see myself out there.
Why on earth would you ever want to talk to random people on the street??
The good thing, I suppose, is that more people going out there should mean rent falls here... but we all know that will never happen since immigrants shoot out a half dozen kids per family, keeping rents nice and lofty.

California Monkeys,
I am a student in LA interning this summer at a BB in New York. I was wondering if any of you had your flights to and from your internship expensed for the summer, or if you just ate the costs given the amount they're already paying you. I just want to get a heads up so its not May and Im getting fucked by Delta Air.
Thanks !
My BB pays for travel through their booking agency. I think it's up to 1,000 round trip
@teller Thanks man. I'll probably just shoot HR an email - just wanted to make sure it wasn't unheard of.
