Can banks push a return offer back a year?
Sophomore at HYPW recruiting for NYC Summer 2027 SA roles in IBD. I’m planning to do a 1-year MSc in the UK after undergrad.
If I get a return offer from a Summer 2027 internship, will banks let me push that to a Summer 2028 SA role and then return FT in 2029? If so, which banks are known to allow this?
Thanks.
But why doe
Personal reasons
Sure, a few banks might be comfortable with doing that - but would recommend to delay the postgrad degree and do banking first. Firms would overwhelmingly fill an immediate slot than wait an extra year for their intern to become an analyst. This is either going to lead to a crappier bank or a summer that doesn't end with an offer.
How would it lead to a worse bank? What are the dynamics at play behind this scenario?
I know someone who deferred a year at a BB to compete in professional lacrosse, so yes they can.
His group was really small and everyone wanted to place in it, apparently someone else deferred the year after which let him place back into the group.
Did that person essentially skip their A1 and go straight to A2? I’m looking to join as an A1 after I get my Master’s degree.
Also do you think this would be more viable at a BB or EB?
Thanks!
No, you dont get to just join as An2 lol
Bump
Yes, I deferred my offer by 1 year. Have friends at JPM who did similar.
If you have an offer for Fulbright, Schwarzman, Marshall, Gates Cambridge etc. most firms will accommodate.
.
Yes, I received one of the above scholarships. I am not sure if a normal masters would be considered in the same way, as the exception was made given that the masters offer could not be deferred.
Candidly, this is a stupid move in this job market. DO NOT defer a year, go get your work experience and get a masters later when the market is ramping up and hot.
I’d get the work experience either way whether it be immediately after I finish undergrad or after I finish the master’s degree a year later.
