can i play pickup basketball as an investment banker?
Any monkeys here play pickup basketball while also being a junior in IB? In my specific case I'm joining a chiller group that has consistently less hours, probably 60-70 average.
Will I have time to play pickup basketball? This is very important to me.
better learn to speak compliance, buddy
shiiii
you should probably pick up a less time intensive hobby, like golf
Only 3s you’ll be shooting are 3am nights
My group avg 60-70hrs as well. However, when I was doing my internship last summer the only days I’d be able to play are Saturdays. And I’d rather sleep in or catch up with some workouts than play basketball. Also note that it’s hard for me to find a court to play pickups unless I join an expensive ass gym
Is an equinox too expensive for intern/juniors? I think theres one near-ish midtown that has a court
Brother I think I'm too spoiled by our school gym. We pay 100 bucks a semester for top-notch gym/rec facilities and classes. $200 or $300 a month really is not reasonable for the amount of time I spend in the gym. The marginal cost of joining Equinox or such way exceeds the benefits. 60-70 hours in theory is not that crazy amount of hours of work and i should have plenty of time to work out and play sports. However, I have no visibility on my schedule as an intern/1st year. I would def consider paying for a good gym membership tho when I become a senior analyst/associate as I have slightly more schedule control/visibility over my time.
EDIT: I work out at the company gym
Haven’t gotten the chance to consistently hoop since I started banking in 2019. In PE now. Maybe one day in HF…
1v1 to 11 for that HF seat?
Yes. I did my 2 years in banking in a sweaty RX group and still found time to play. Sounds like you’ll have even better hours too.
If you’re a college student going to IB this summer, one thing I would say is to expect work to be your number one priority in your first year and don’t expect to make plans M-F (ie don’t expect to be able to ball during the week. Not saying it can’t happen, but mentally prepare that it won’t be likely). This sounds shitty (because it is), but after a year or two of it you’ll have more optionality to do what suits your schedule.
Saturday / Sunday work could be 30-40 hours some weekends but based on what you say of your group, I would guess that is going to be rare for you. There will be many instances where you’ll have plenty of time to do a drop-in open court session at the Y for a couple hours on the weekend.
Much appreciated man
Jesus Christ who is pulling 40 hours on Saturday and Sunday. Assuming you're in a busy period of 18-hour weekdays, then that means your pulling 130. You really shouldn't be doing over 120, from there something has to be seriously wrong.
Yeah it sucked. That is why I no longer work in banking loool
Not in IB but typically 9-7 which seems somewhat in-line with you if including weekends.
I routinely play at a set time every week (5:30). Everyone knows the time and day since I’ve been consistent (I know a lot of guys will be unable to find a run that is consistent week-to-week).
It hasn’t been a problem and I think they even respect me for it since my group is all fit. I’ll usually log back on afterwards to catch up on anything I missed.
The hard part was dipping out early the first week I started playing pickup but eventually it’s become a routine and no one gives me any shit for it.
Looking back, I’m so glad I did it. Would probably have another 15lb on me if I didn’t lol
Where are you located? Can get you into some runs.
SA 25 in nyc, appreciate it man
Rising sophomore looking to get into some runs with bankers in nyc. Would love to play pick up
