Caught in two minds about whether to enrol at target?
A bit about my background: I'm currently about to start my 4th year out of 6 studying medicine (undergrad) at a semi target university but have decided to recruit for finance instead of pursuing a career in medicine. I also have a BSc from Imperial in medical sciences that I completed last year (one year spent at Imperial, two years at semi target but degree is awarded from Imperial) as part of medicine degree (intercalated degree which is common as part of UK medicine degrees). For context I'm non diversity.
The dilemma I have is that I've managed to get a last minute offer for chemistry at Warwick starting in September. Its 3 years so would graduate at the same time as staying on medicine degree. Obviously this is a target and would theoretically be better to recruit for finance from but I am also worried that it might make me odds worse as on my CV it would look like I have completed 2 bachelors degrees therefore giving off a "professional student" vibe. Whereas I think my current situation makes more sense when reading my CV and provides a better explanation to my "story" when answering interview questions. From what I've heard lack of finance experience is a problem if you have been in university for longer as I have therefore I have a feeling it would look worse when recruiting for springs this year. In addition it would cost me £20k more in tuition fees due to it being classed as a second bachelors degree whereas staying on a medicine degree wouldn't. I don't have any finance experience other than finance society positions that I have at my semi target for this year which I wouldn't have if I switched to Warwick.
I would appreciate any advice or insight on my situation as I'm completely caught in two minds as to what would be the best direction to take and I'm not sure if the reasons above are legitimate concerns or me just worrying too much. Thank you.
Bump anyone?
Hi, hopefully can answer some of your questions. For context I'm a chemistry student and you can definitely break into finance with this degree but you can also do it from medicine if you can demonstrate interest in the field. There were a few medics on the spring weeks I did so it won't hold you back at all since you will also be applying to spring weeks where you aren't expected to have as much finance experience (I had none). Your society positions will help you demonstrate interest in finance. Feel free to PM if you want to chat more about it.
Have PM'd you!
Imo don’t do chemistry at Warwick. Honestly people will respect a medicine degree much more. In this era of arbitrary diversity quotas you need to stand out and been a medic is a great way to do so + imperial brand name will help to. Just get ur CV in shape over summer and apply to spring weeks come September. Apply early and make sure you pass the tests and you will definitely land a few offers. Don’t worry about not having much finance experience. Just make sure ur CV is well formatted and not completely blank and you’ll be good.
