Christmas + NYE at IB

What’s up monkeys,

I am about to start full time at PWP/LAZ/MOCO in a non-NYC group and I’m wondering how banks usually handle analyst capacities during the holiday season. Specifically I’m wondering if I am going to be required to be in office around Christmas (22nd to 26th) or can I work from home with my family? How about New Years Eve and Day?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

With the new WFH I doubt you will be required to be in office.  But expect to be working execpt for the evening of the 24th morning of the 25th/sometimes evening and then the evening of the 31st unless your team sucks then you can kiss this all goodbye.

Granted this Christmas and new years both fall on the weekend this year so odds are you will be good if you have protected Saturdays.

Not sure what the other poster is talking about. I worked in a sweatshop with a really rough culture, and pre-pandemic, no one was expected to be in the office for the two week Christmas and NYE period. Banking is a rough place with consistently terrible hours, but people really don’t work Christmas and NYE in IBD/PE. Most senior bankers will be skiing and it’s the one time of year they actually devote to their families. The general mentality is only work if you absolutely must and you can work from wherever. There are always a few unlucky analysts every year that get crushed, but most analysts get a good part of two weeks off or will have light weeks. This is client driven industry, and most clients will not want to meet with you from Dec 20-Jan 5th and PE partners also want their time off. Additionally, some clients will have quiet periods / company-wide vacation where they take holidays off / refuse to schedule meetings. Christmas and NYE were the only times of year I worked less than my friends with normal jobs.

This is how it is at my bank/group.

Most people are generally off with some light work here and there. There are always a couple exceptions though…

Inevitably there’s some d-bag MD that schedules a catch up meeting with a sponsor on like Jan 2 with 25 “interesting situations” that the sponsor has known about for 6 months… or your M&A process timeline got all fucked up in October and the CEO wants to sign the deal by Dec 31 for no reason…

I think this’ll be my year to be fucked as I had the last two years completely off those two weeks

Exactly. This seemed to be the case across all the groups in my bank and across my friends at other banks. There are always one or two analysts who unfortunately get wrecked by a wild M&A process timeline or some MD that decides to use the time off for the holidays to spawn 20 new scenarios for a book in early January. This was more the exception than the norm though. For the very few meetings scheduled in first week of Jan, the (reasonable) teams would usually try to wrap the books up before Christmas week. This was also the only week of year that we didn't have to price update a two week stale book.

If a group like the one I was in can take off most of the Christmas / NYE weeks, I find it difficult to imagine that other groups cannot. My group was typically 90-100 hours a week, but the weeks around Christmas and NYE were viewed as "sacred," and I think this is the general mentality in IB / PE. You get crushed every week of the year, but you don't mess with Christmas / NYE week—these are two weeks to celebrate the past year and get ready for the next.

Dont let the job consume you. You have to draw lines and people will generally respect that. If someone emails me on Christmas I’m not answering you till the 26th. Be mad all you want, nothing will be urgent on that day, no client is going to read anything you send. Send me a note after 5pm on New Year’s Eve? Not answering you till late afternoon on Jan 1. Your family and health is more important. Dont be afraid to live your life sometimes, especially on holidays and tell people to F off. Is the extra 10k in your bonus really worth it? That answer is different for everyone and as long as you are ok with your answer, then do what you’d like on those days.

That’s just my opinion. Last year I didn’t do work on those days and will not be doing work on those days this year again.
