Coffee Chat

Currently shooting out networking emails to every under the sun. Emailed a VP and got a zoom coffee chat set up with an associate. I introduced myself, my background, and explained my past intern experiences. Then I got asked if there was a transaction I had been following. After running through my thoughts on Microsoft-Act Blizzard, the associate randomly goes "alright this is what we'll do". He tells me a lot of the team are athletes, same as me, and I am on the shortlist for the firm. He explained they look for people that are passionate about the specific industry, bank, and geographics. He said next steps are a technical interview and he'll contact me next week.

Any thoughts? Seemed weird he randomly cut the chat off abruptly.

Sounds like it was less of a coffee chat and more of a screening interview. Associate likely just wanted to make sure you had a sense of what it is you’re getting into, and judging by the thrust of the deal discussion, you satisfied that requirement. As for the abrupt end, the associate probably had other things to do and was happy enough with your answers to move you to the technical round. Wouldn’t read much more into it. Well done and good luck with rest of process!

Completely unwarranted advice but I had several analysts tell me during coffee chats how sick they were of candidates talking about that deal lol, so perhaps find another

Totally agree. The group is specifically focused on Software so I went with one of the major players in that industry. Maybe Adobe's acquisition of Abstract. When they ask for a recent deal, do they mean in the last month or would you say the last 6 months is adequate?

I would know both - default to one that isn't from the bank if they don't specify because if they happened to work on that deal, you can't get anything wrong, but sometimes they will specifically ask if you know a deal their group completed.
