If you are a permanent employee it is customary that the employer gives you a work laptop and a cell phone. In rare circumstances this may not be the case or they have other solutions (I have seen cloud-only employers where everything was done through online services, etc).
Maybe there is a bank out there that doesn't pay for your phone, but it is in their own interest that your team can reach you.

You aren't going to want to wait for a company phone. You can only use them for company business. So if your point is you get a free upgraded phone for personal use through your work, you are thinking about it all wrong.

Some firms have moved to a BYOD (bring your own device) policy. My BB provides a work phone, however it can't even really access the internet. Everything is through a blackberry app. Safari, the mail app, iMessages all don't work. You won't be able/should not use the company phone for personal purposes. Don't even give the number to your friends.
