Connection Sincerity

I find there is a large gap between a connection established via networking which offers words of encouragement and one which actually acts on their word.

What have some of your experiences been with those you met networking, visited the group, been asked to send updates on the recruiting process etc.

How have some of these connections (strictly non-family, non-friend, only via school network) helped you?

one of mine has been absolutely unreal...before my first round interview we set up a phone call so she could prep me with things to prepare, and actually knew before me that i got the superday (she kept inquiring with hr), and then we had a string of about 15 emails the day before my superday where she peppered me with interview questions and critiqued my answers. has been unreal to me throughout the process. and yes, this contact is a school-only contact

I have been fairly lucky in terms of how connections have helped me out. Two personal/family contacts have gone out of their way to 'create' paid internships at their respective companies, one a F500 finance position and one a Canadian BB finance position. Another wasn't able to find me a placement, but put me into contact with a second year IB associate at a different Canadian BB. On the other hand, I know lots of people who have connections but they have not been useful at all when it comes to advice, job search help, etc...

That's the name of the game, partner. That's why they say, "it just takes one." Sure, that may be true, but if it were easy then everybody would be in this industry. That "one" who will actually "do" is very hard to come by. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. Dig long enough and you should run into it...sometime...

Sounds like some of you guys have had some real wonderful connections. I haven't had anyone who really took it upon themselves to help make sure I made it through the recruiting process, but my boss this summer ended up being someone who really went to bat for me once I made it in the door.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.
