Consequences with reneging

Due to a change in my personal situation and circumstances, I may have to renege on a full time offer that I accepted previously.

What are the consequences of reneging on this employer besides getting blacklisted? Would this employer go after me and try to fck me over or try to ruin my professional reputation? For more context, this employer is not exactly in the industry that I hope to be in.

Depends, are you reneging JPM to go work at GS, or are you giving up on finance and heading off to live off the land in the forest?

I think reneging a boutique for a BB/EB offer is okay, or if you decide you don't want to do IB and take a SWE offer, etc... but if your next opportunity is in the same space with a similar level firm that works with your new offer, I would be a little wary. I highly doubt anyone is going to go after you that seriously or try to get your offer pulled, but people on the recruiting team might remember your name if you're looking for a second or third job

Also it goes without saying but keep your next job quiet. No telling the old firm where you're going, don't do a LinkedIn post or put "Incoming XYZ" on there.

I would say you are 100% fine. That is very different

Just be short and appreciative - something along the lines of "I really appreciate the offer, but over the last few months I've been reflecting on my career goals and have decided to pursue a different opportunity in another industry. Therefore, I will not be able to continue with the offer at X. Thank you so much for the opportunity, and please let me know if you need any paperwork or additional information from me."

obviously if they ask the company don't tell. But really you would only have issues if you were headed to another F500 comms company

Thanks for sharing your insights on this! One of the directors at the F500 company that I interviewed with actually did a 2 year analyst stint in IB before pivoting to do corporate finance at that F500. Given that I would be going into banking (different bank than the one the director went to), just wondering whether there be any risk due to this and whether she may leverage her connections to find out where I'm going?

She was just one of the interviewers, not exactly my manager.
