Cut from a spring internship, have a SA offer for next summer. Will my SA offer get pulled?
For context: I'm a rising junior. Was let go from a small buyside internship earlier this summer (4 months in), performance related, no conduct issue. They said I was not doing enough work and made some mistakes in my work and let me go. Have a signed IBD SA offer for summer 2027 at a MM bank. This experience wasn't listed on my resume when I interviewed/applied. I pulled my Work Number report and the role is on there with dates and title, reason for termination blank.
I have 2 questions:
Does anyone actually know whether SA background checks include a reference component, or is it verification only? Do the third party vendors actually call past employers and ask about performance and reason for leaving?
If they somehow find out I was let go, how likely are they to pull my SA offer before starting?
Plus any other tips for my current situation would be much appreciated :)
I doubt they’ll ask for a reference from your sophomore internship if you already got the junior year internship offer. You’ll likely just need to give a school transcript, if even that.
Are you saying that you think they won’t contact my old firm in the background check? Or are you talking about a reference check?
Both - I don’t think they’ll do a reference check or a major background check. If they do a background check, just don’t list that job
Wouldn’t leaving it off a background check be shady? If they find out about it and I left it off wouldn’t that raise some flags?
Dude you’re overthinking this way too much. It’s a sophomore internship, no one GAF
Highly doubt this would ever come up. Just logically how would they ever know? If you're already in, you're in. They're not doing additional checks until before you start full-time if you get an offer. You should take it as a lesson, though, and make a serious effort + review your work closely next summer.
