Delaying Start Date for FT Offer
Finished my SA internship, I was fortunate enough to get a FT offer. I have not signed yet but the offer is exploding soon.

I had a friend who "tried" to delay his FT at GS after a SA the MD took back the offer and never talked to him again to be honest just for a poker game wait to do that until you're an ED at least you'll have plenty of time. Except that that really depends on the MD's temper and current deal schedule
Why the " " around "tried"?
Fair enough, so from your perspective, it's a 100% denial + burning bridges then. On that note, might be wiser to just turn down the offer? What's a graceful way that turns down the offer?
Why don't you just take the offer and have a safe income? Do you think you're going to make >130k playing poker? I would just continue to study it on the side / when you have time as an analyst, and maybe when you exit or get promoted, pursue professional poker.
You've been studying for 4 or 5 years. Studying another year or two and having a really good bank roll behind you can't hurt.
EDIT: Can I PM you asking a couple of questions? I'm a rising junior right now looking to get a BB IBD summer internship.
Yeah I would def do two years as an analyst and then try out poker. Will have more savings then too.
Like I said, I'm pursuing poker for personal reasons that I feel very strongly about. I realize I might not make the same amount of money within a year as I would in IB.
I appreciate everyone's input. However, I am more interested in people's opinions of what is most likely going to happen. I have two decisions: - outright decline - try for a deferral
Thoughts?
if those are the two options that you want to pursue you have to try to defer, as the worst result that could become would be the same as a decline. Just ask someone that you developed a close relationship with during your summer.
If you ask for a deferral, what is the reason you are going to tell the MD? Honestly, if you had a legitimate reason like a health issue confirmed by a doctor, then that would be case worth contemplating. Just remember, there will always be people lined up for your spot.
But to answer your question -- and as it seems like you've already made your decision on pursing Poker -- I would ask for a deferral because it wouldn't hurt to do so. Pretty much the same as flat out rejecting except you have that slight hope for a deferral.
I plan to be honest. Because I want to pursue my dream of playing poker
Off topic question -- where do you plan to play? Online or at a casino?
I would recommend doing the 2 yr analyst stint and then looking into it. The US scene may be different by then. Amaya/Pokerstars has been doing a lot of lobbying.
Jw, what stakes have you been playing at?
Not American so this doesn't affect me. I actually know some of the people that have been lobbying for this.
I appreciate your recommendation, but I am quite determined to see this through. Off of your experience, would you be able to provide an opinion of what you think will happen in the meeting with my MD?
Stakes: $1/$2 16-table Looking to move into $2/$5 but I have a lot of leaks that need to be addressed before then.
I'm rolled for basically any online tournament. Sometimes if I want to take a break I put the game on, crack open a beer, and multi-table random tournaments.
