Direct Lending/Private Capital WLB

Hello all, I’m mulling a pivot to private credit/direct lending but really don’t see much out there on the WLB aspect of it. After the death of someone extremely important to me, the idea of WLB has really been at the forefront of my thinking lately. Can someone speak to WLB in the DL/PC space? Hours? Weekend work? I would really appreciate any and all guidance you can offer me on this. Thank you in advance

Hey there,

First off, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. It's definitely important to prioritize what matters most to you, and if work-life balance (WLB) is at the top of your list, that's totally understandable.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you might expect regarding WLB in the private credit/direct lending space:

  • Hours: The work hours in private credit/direct lending can be more predictable than in other areas of finance. While it's not a 9-5 job, the hours are generally more consistent and may not swing as wildly as in investment banking or traditional private equity. You might be looking at something like 9 am to 7 pm on a regular day.

  • Weekend Work: It's less common to have weekend work in private credit/direct lending compared to more transactional roles. However, this can vary by firm and when deals are closing or during particularly busy periods, you might need to put in some hours over the weekend.

  • Firms with Good WLB: While specific firm names with good WLB weren't mentioned in the context provided, it's noted that smaller funds or credit funds that are not as competitive as the large ones tend to offer better WLB. It's also mentioned that some credit funds require around 40 hours per week, which is quite reasonable in the finance industry.

Remember, the culture of the firm can greatly influence WLB, so it's worth looking into the specific firms you're interested in and trying to get a sense of their culture and expectations. Networking and speaking directly with current or past employees can give you the best insight into what WLB really looks like at a particular firm.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck in finding a role that fits your life and allows you to honor the memory of your loved one.
