Do I even stand a chance

I have a strong interest in making the attempt to break into Investment Banking, such as M&A and ECM. Since I go to a non-target school, I believe this will be a challenge. I am a sophomore doubling in Finance and Public Accounting with a minor in Econ, and hold a 3.7 GPA. My extra curricular activities include Acting Director of Finance at my fraternity, member of American Red Cross Club and hopeful future treasurer, and I also have future plans of becoming an RA at my school. I am also in the process of creating a finance/stock investment club at my school with several of my peers. I have recently been selected to work on a research project with a professor in our accounting and finance department that take place over the course of the next two years, and will be presented in Chicago in 2017, to the North American Accounting Society, with high hopes that our work will be published.

I will be interning at the United States Department of Treasury: Fiscal Service starting this summer, which will continue throughout college if I so choose. The internship will involve me analyzing complex financial transactions, generation of financial reports and models, decision making and taking proper actions for transactions, ensuing compliance with certain regulations, and reviewing accuracy and making necessary adjustments.

Does anyone have any advice? Do I stand a legitimate shot breaking into the IB world?

@Dreezy.... First: Congratulations on your current accomplishments and drive. DO NOT SLACK! Their will be challenges and that is ok. Just learn from them but do not give up.

Second: WSO is full of Non-Target to BB examples that should provide you with enough confidence that you can ram your head through a wall and ask for a beer afterwards.

Third: Seek and build your network now and never forget that your professors are also a networking resource.

Fourth: Crush your internship. It is giving you a unique experience that few seek out which will make you stand out over other candidates.

Good Luck.

@"Dreezy" You are a sophomore and you have to be truthful with yourself about what your true career desires are. If IB is what you truly want then use this internship as leverage.

For the summer of 2016 ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY go for an IB internship. I am not in IB but I can tell you truthfully that you are already a leg up over a lot of folks just by doing an internship as a sophomore while in school and having your current GPA.

No one nor a class room environment will teach you hard work, balancing work life balance and most of all will you be ready to learn while drinking from a fire hose. This is a good opportunity.

What is your geographic location? That may play a factor as to who you can reach out to. Have you engaged your Alumni network? These are things that you need to start looking at along with everything else.

Also reach out to folks on WSO....there are so many guys and gals here that will help you as long as you reach out and have a good story.

Anyone has a shot of breaking into IB, it just depends on how badly you want it. Keep your head down and network like a baws! Sorry I can't give you more tailored advice; I tend to get lost in the realms of US recruitment.

Bitch please, I love bananas! If you found my advice useful, hit me up with one.
