does client relationship count for an internship??

hey guys, i have recently applied to a bulge bracket firm for an internship and my father is the CFO of a company that's an investment banking client for this bulge bracket firm....will that help me in securing an internship???

lucky you. I think your father can definitely call his liason/contact/whoever to help get you some kind of position. But I'm def sure... something..

Now my father actually works as a janitor in a building that houses a particular BB bank. Maybe the next time he goes up window-washing he can tap the glass and strike up a conversation with a MD.

you have to have your dad talk to some MD there, you cant expect HR to just know who you are from your last name. and yes, this will help you get a job.

Sure, if you want to be like George W. Bush. Be a man and have some pride in yourself. Use that prep-school charm to make contacts on your own.

Who knows, maybe you'll actually find someone who likes you for you? Or at least wants to take advantage of you for YOUR talent and not your dad's?

Ask your dad for help for that particular BB, but also apply on your own merits for the other BBs. At least you will know where you really stand. If those that you apply on your own merits did not work out, take the offer from that BB which your dad had a relationship with (as a last resort). People have less respect for an analyst who got in only because of his dad (and this will affect the work you do and your performance), hence I would recommend that BB as a back up option.

i clearly understand that its not so great to use contacts...but really...ive been doing this thing for nearly 3 months now...and its so hard to break the ibanking industry especially at a BB...ive tried incredibly hard...ive spoken to tons of people on my own...ive sent many resumes and cover letters out....and so this is why im trying to secure an internship using contacts...of course given the choice i would much rather get an internship on my own accord..but i go to UF...so its a lot lot harder for me than it is for people from wharton, harvard or any of the top 8...ive reached a point where im considering transferring to a better school just so i can land a job at a BB

Use your contacts, and dont be ashamed of it at all. Everyone does the same, and the people that tell you not too or yell at you are just saying that because they dont have contacts of their own. Do whatever it takes.

No. Use contacts. Seriously. Specifically the ones you make on your own.

But don't come complaining to people on this board when other analysts in the office don't respect you and you are having a difficult time respecting yourself.

That said, there's still hope. If you are qualified, you will find a way. Fuck the "top 8" schools.

If your only "way" (as I mentioned above) is through your pops, I actually pity you. Instead, take initiative and make it happen for yourself.

It may not seem like it initially, but I am on your side here.

thats pretty stupid though. Lets say your dad is an MD and he helps you get an interview and ultimately a job...it'd be stupid not to use any resources at your disposable. If you get the job because of your job AND you use your dads position of power to slack off or get away with shit that other analysts wouldn't be able to do then thats one thing. But if your pulling all nighters along with everyone else I dont see why you dont deserve their respect.

use whatever you can, but realize that you will still have to prove yourself. if you plan on just weaseling and doing jack shit, then obviously it will have consequences. up to a certain point, unless your dad is blankfein or really up there, you will have to prove yourself, no matter who got you in there.

The analysts who are willing to earn respect by pulling all-nighters and busting their ass in general are the same analysts with the ability to make their own contacts and earn their way in.

If a person's only chance to get into a BB is through his pops, it's because he/she is doing something wrong. And people don't change over night.

Generally my impression is that connections will get you an interview and maybe get in you an offer for internship, but you still have to earn the right to go back for full-time. If you're incompetent, they won't keep you. If you're good, you'll earn your spot.

With contacts you make - yes. With contacts based on continuing business from daddy - doubtful.

theHam1, you clearly do not have any idea what you are talking about. Anyone involved in recruiting will tell you that there are plenty of qualified people who do not get spots because there simply aren't enough openings. To imply that because he cannot get in on his own merits (when so much of the process is based on luck) it means he is not "good" enough for IBD...

Bottom line, do whatever you have to to get a job. The system is not fair, it is not equitable so act accordingly.

(a) I knew a friend from high school who's currently in BB. It was a luck of the draw that I got to know him. I obviously didn't know he would get into banking 10 years down the road. (b) my dad's a client of a BB bank. Why is it more right to use (a) as leverage, but not (b)?

Suppose my dad ran a great business and I took over his business after he retired and I became CEO. this is so common place in private businesses, and yes daddy helped me get that. However, if I don't prove myself on the job, it will show, won't it?

i'm willing to work the 15hours a night...and I'm sure I would be able to do a good job because a lot of people here including professors ave trusted me with research papers and have been very happy with my work so far...so if I get an internship, then I'll make sure I get an offer full time, even if I have to work twice as hard as others..and earn their respect...its just the initial bit of securing one that I'm working hard on...in fact, if I can get just an interview then I shall be able to take care of the rest on my own..

Boozer, you sound like one of those "qualified" people who did not get a spot.

Is I-Banking hard? NO. Is landing a job competitive? Relative to other jobs, yes.

The interviewers are trying to find the best candidates possible. If you did not get a spot but 10 other people did, you did something wrong and they did something right. Sit down and examine what that right and wrong may be.

Take some personal responsibility. Take some ownership. Man the fuck up.

Go back and read what I posted. I did not say he could not complete the mundane tasks of banking. However, he WILL be compared to others in his analyst class. If they received a position based on their own merits, they are more than likely going to perform at a much higher level.

If nothing else, the intangible portions of there personality will shine through in other aspects on the job. The monkey work is only part of the job. The successful candidates will continue to make contacts and separate themselves from the pack.

Luck? The most successful people create their own luck.

Ham, calm down dude. Just saying the recruiting process is as much as about luck (especially if you're a non-target) as it is about being qualified and prepared. Bottom line, it's still a numbers game, and there are far more applicants than spots (especially these days). I'm sure a lot people caught a lucky break at some point, and as many people have had an unlucky break.

Quite frankly, I don't think you got my point about having connections. You may be given an interview based on your connections, but your performance still determines whether or not you get the job, regardless of what connections you have (unless maybe you're the CEO's son). Besides, a connection is a connection, does it really matter what circumstance it was made from?
