Lets say you're at a BB doing IB or any other type of work. How much does GPA matter if you're trying to jump to another firm to do IB or change from one industry to do IB?
Is it more about experience? Or do they look at GPA as well?

Probably depends on how far along your working life you already are. If you're a year out of college? Yeah, sure. Five years? Not so much.
Similar tier IB -> IB, nobody cares. The fact that you have applicable experience is great.
Engineering -> IB, you better have awesome grades
What about S&T -> IB or PE -> IB?
This is depressing and ironic because of how much more difficult it is to get awesome grades in engineering than in things like economics/finance ):
PE, probably fine.
S&T, I have serious doubts. I'd say S&T is almost as relevant as an engineering job

Im now in banking at one of the largest non-BB banks in the world. I am getting BB lateral interviews no problem :p
I interview a lot of people from BB IB for PE jobs, and we do look at GPA as a factor. Bit just nowhere the top factor. So long as you have over a 3.5, you're fine. If you're at a top top tier firm like GS or MS it may be less of an issue, as you have been vetted. Personally, I think that if you have a lower GPA you should not put it on the resume, as some people may disqualify you. You'll have questions to answer later about it, but at least you'll have the chance to do it.
GPA for Lateraling Among I-Banks as Analyst (Originally Posted: 01/05/2013)
I'm currently a first year capital markets analyst at a bulge bracket level bank. My goal is to lateral banks as soon as I can because I don't want to be in capital markets. I ended college (top 25 USNWR, semi target) with a 3.1. I had a 3.5 for junior spring summer recruiting, got a summer offer and just started coasting. I also took easy classes early on to get my grades up and then had all hard classes at the end. Also, the 3.1 number is for soph. - senior college. Transfered after freshman year from a lesser school w/ a 3.5. Individual gpa's for each semester of college were either 3.5 or above or 2.8 or below, so I was either really trying or really not. No legitimate excuses/reasons beyond that.
