Does Job Security Vary by City?

I hear in the US during bad years they cut a lot of their staff and even worse during a recession. In a few years, I'm hoping to join the finance scene in Toronto. In another thread, someone stated that in 2008 there were a lot of bankers in NYC that got laid off but in Toronto, it affected very few peoples' employment.

I was wondering if job security is better there since Toronto hires less people per year than NY firms do.

Thanks
