Does RE Investment Banking Silo You?

I am an incoming SA at a BB in NYC with a strong RE group. I like a lot of the people in the group, and I think that RE has the potential to be very interesting, but I am also worried about getting siloed in a specific field at such a young age. Is it possible to move from RE IB to a generalist role at an UMM or MM PE firm, or would be I have to transition to a REPE firm? If I decide to stay in RE, what is the typical career progression for someone in REPE, and what would the exits look like if I decided that REPE isn't right for me? Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes. But it is one of the cooler areas of finance, and if you are passionate about it, who cares?

You’ll have to specialize somewhere down the line, and it’s better to do so sooner than later. Also if you in fact got into BofA’s REGL group, there’s literally nothing to worry about. They have been the top group on the street for the past decade and will essentially open doors to every conceivable RE related opps

Have seen multiple analysts from top REGL groups (MS/BAML) exit to generalist MM PE
