Does Sophomore summer even matter anymore?

With recruiting being so early nowadays (Sophomore Winter/Spring), is there any importance to a sophomore summer internship? Obviously, freshman summer internships will be on resume by the time recruiting kicks off but sophomore summer will merely be a line item "Incoming ____." Is it worth searching for a sophomore boutique banking gig e.g?

Define most. Incoming at EB and everyone in my class had a sophomore SA when recruiting except for like one off random Dartmouth kids who somehow dont know what WACC is and still got the job. This is consistent with my friends at other EBs/Top 3 BB/Buyside

Feel like sophomore internships don’t matter that much anymore starting this year since most of the kids got offer this year mainly because they work on their technicals, networking. Unless you’re in GWI then that prolly helps a bit imo. But again, it all depends on whether you fit the industry, connections, and personality.

Your sophomore summer is your last summer before you have to work for the rest of your life. Most people I know just did a regional boutique investment bank but it’s fine to not do anything.

It's for sure helpful to have something to talk about with "this is what I'm doing this summer" - that said my team hired someone before they were able to land a soph summer gig, they ended up studying abroad and had a great time.

Is it the traditional path, definitely not, but can't blame them if they were able to land junior SA without sophomore SA

With all of the Sophomore SA programs at BBs now gone (this is the last summer for BofA and MS), I think it's only helpful if you get into one of the incredible buyside programs. Silverlake and Advent for example have sophomore internships. They typically don't give returns, but if they like you and you have a strong Junior banking SA then you are at the top of their list for on-cycle.

Anecdotally I know people at my school going to any bank you can name for Junior summer who are doing nothing serious Sophomore summer. One of my friends is GS/MS/JP and working as a caddy lol. It's probably good to do something just so the resume's not blank for the summer, but it doens't need to be a hardcore finance internship.

Silverlake’s internships are largely secured through POSSE (a diversity scholarship program). There might be one off cases for people who third door it or have impressed someone at the firm, but their traditional internship closed down in the early 2020s as they slowed analyst recruiting. Additionally, Advent might not even have their internship this year since it’s DEI focused and those seem to be the programs all of the firms are cutting this summer
