Downtime
When you have no deals going on, or aren’t staffed on a deal in any given week, what do you guys do? For reference I’m a first year analyst (excuse the title), should I be making models from scratch for practice or something? I feel like I’m twiddling my thumbs all day in some weeks
just chill and use it to recharge, you are bound to get super busy again and will be wishing you took some time to relax..
Once you get fully ramped up, you'll have random "admin" tasks that'll fill the time (responding to non-urgent emails, expense reports, recruiting)
but generally you just need to learn to be comfortable being slow sometimes. As a brand new analyst, go explore deal folders and look through decks. Save down models on your desktop and see how they did each part of it.
This ^^. Read a lot, get coffee with people on your team, follows financial news, etc.
Adding on here:
Use the time to improve on skills you feel weak in (modeling, Ppt, etc.), industry news / primers / research (this is huge and will pay dividends when u have to draft industry pages down the road)
