Downtime at work?

Just started last summer as an AN1. Typically days are quite jam-packed from morning to late evening, but occasionally it happens that my workload dries up / I've done all that I've needed to do for the deals or pitches I'm working on. These pockets of free time aren't that long, usually just 30 minutes or so, but I'm not exactly sure what's the best thing to do.

What do others do when given a slight bit of downtime at the office? I sit right next to my associate so I can't really goof off. Normally I just browse the WSJ or Bloomberg news. Should I be asking if I can help out more with something else?
