Duke clubs

I'm a current freshman at Duke trying to break into IB. I know clubs matter for recruiting, but having been rejected from basically everything, I'm curious as to just how far that sets me back. I know I go to a target school so I have some cushion, but realistically what banks should I aim for without I-club or Scale on my resume? Or is everything still on the table because of the Duke name. Thanks.

Without being part of Duke's top finance clubs like I-Club or Scale and Coin, you're not entirely out of the game, but it does make the path more challenging. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Duke's Target Status: Duke is a recognized target school for investment banking, with strong representation across bulge bracket banks like UBS AG, Wells Fargo, and Morgan Stanley. This means you still have a solid chance to break into IB, even without club affiliations, as long as you leverage Duke's brand and alumni network effectively.

  2. Networking is Key: Since you're not in the top clubs, focus heavily on networking. Duke alumni are known to be friendly and willing to help underclassmen. Reach out to alumni in the industry, schedule informational interviews, and build genuine connections. Alumni can often help bypass the lack of club experience by advocating for you.

  3. Target Banks: While the lack of club experience might make it harder to land at elite boutiques (EBs) or the most competitive bulge bracket groups, you can still aim for mid-tier bulge brackets, regional offices, or even smaller firms. Banks like Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch have shown interest in recruiting from a wider range of schools and candidates.

  4. Alternative Strategies:

    • Technical Prep: Without the training from clubs, you'll need to self-study technicals rigorously. Use resources like the WSO IB Prep Course or other guides to ensure you're ready for interviews.
    • Resume Boosters: Seek internships, even unpaid ones, in finance-related roles to build your resume. Consider joining other organizations like the Duke Impact Investing Group (DIIG), which, while not as prestigious as I-Club, still provides valuable experience.
  5. Mindset: Remember, while clubs provide a structured path, they aren't the only way to break into IB. Many successful candidates have done so through sheer determination, networking, and preparation.

In summary, while not being in I-Club or Scale might limit your options slightly, the Duke name still carries significant weight. Focus on networking, technical prep, and gaining relevant experience to keep as many doors open as possible.

Everyone is technically a member of iclub, try dsp or akpsi, join tamid, DIIG, first-gen investors, bull city beds or campus enterprises. You just need two-ish clubs, then do FMARKET256. So many people aren't in those clubs, you just need to be friends with upperclassmen. Make sure you rush greeklife
