Early-cycle IBD recruiting (2027/2028 SA): what actually differentiates candidates?

Starting to prepare for 2027/2028 IBD summer analyst recruiting and trying to understand what really separates candidates this early in the cycle.

At this stage, it feels like everyone has solid technical prep (or is getting there) and the same deal sheets/guides

I’m networking consistently and working through technicals, but I’m struggling to tell where marginal effort actually pays off.

For those who went through early-cycle IBD - how deep were interviewers expecting technicals this far out? Did you focus more on story/fit or just mastering technicals???
