Early graduation - ask about FT conversion before internship starts?
Rising sophomore at a non-target, incoming summer intern at a MM bank (HL/HW/Piper). Recently found out I have the flexibility to graduate early (Spring 2027) and could potentially join the FT analyst class of 2027 instead of going through the summer program.
Has anyone been in this situation or seen it play out? A few things I'm wondering:
Is it worth raising this with HR before the internship starts, or does it come across as presumptuous before I've proven anything?
If I raise it and they say no, does it hurt my chances of getting a return offer after the summer?
Not trying to skip out on the internship experience, genuinely just want to understand if this is a realistic ask or if I should just do the summer and go from there.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Raising the Topic with HR Before the Internship: It's generally not advisable to bring up full-time conversion before the internship starts. Doing so might come across as presumptuous since you haven't yet demonstrated your value to the firm. The internship is your opportunity to prove yourself, and discussions about full-time roles are typically more appropriate toward the end of the internship when you've built a track record.
Impact on Return Offer Chances: If you raise the topic prematurely and they decline, it could potentially create a perception that you're not fully committed to the internship experience. This might inadvertently hurt your chances of securing a return offer. Firms value interns who are focused on excelling in their current role rather than appearing overly eager to bypass the process.
Alternative Approach: Instead of raising the topic upfront, focus on excelling during your internship. Build strong relationships with your team and demonstrate your capabilities. Toward the end of the internship, if you've performed well, you can have a conversation with HR or your manager about your early graduation plans and explore the possibility of joining the full-time analyst class early.
Internship Experience Value: Even if you have the flexibility to graduate early, the internship experience is invaluable. It allows you to gain hands-on experience, build your network, and solidify your candidacy for a full-time role. Skipping this step might limit your exposure and development opportunities.
In summary, prioritize excelling in your internship and revisit the conversation about early graduation and full-time conversion toward the end of the program. This approach ensures you don't jeopardize your chances and positions you as a thoughtful and committed candidate.
