EB Summer Associate — No Return Offer, Advice on FT Recruiting?
T15 MBA here. Interned at an EB this summer but unfortunately didn’t get a return offer. Reviews were positive with no major negative feedback, but I didn’t have enough senior people advocating for me when decisions were made.
I’ve been re-recruiting for FT IB but getting pretty limited traction. I exhausted much of my school/alumni network during SA recruiting and have been cold reaching out, but response rates are low. I’m also international and need sponsorship, which makes things harder.
I’m considering WSO Academy mainly for the network and mentorship. For anyone who has used it, how helpful is the network in actually connecting with bankers and expanding beyond your existing contacts?
Also would appreciate any advice from people who successfully re-recruited after not getting a return. Pretty exhausted at this point, but not ready to give up yet...
What’s the real reason you didn’t get a return offer? Interns don’t get much face time either seniors. So that rationale you gave doesn’t hold water. Be honest, what did you do?
Yeah, I had a really good mid-cycle review, and a few people I worked with actually called me after the decision saying they were surprised and didn’t really know what happened either.
A couple things probably played into it. It was the first year they did this group ranking/matching system. I ranked Group A first because they told me they had 2-3 spots and asked me to work on a few deals with them, so I felt pretty good about it. They ended up only giving out 1 offer though.
Group B was my second choice, and I think they knew I didn’t rank them first and assumed I probably wouldn’t come back even if they gave me an offer. Looking back, I also probably could’ve done a better job building a relationship with one of the VPs/staffers there. He was actually the person who vouched for me during SA recruiting, but he was under a ton of pressure toward the end of the summer and I probably should’ve been more proactive about staying close to him.
I don’t blame anyone though. Everyone I worked with, including that staffer, said they’d be happy to give me a strong reference. Just trying to figure out what I could’ve done better, learn from it and move on.
It just sounds like another failed summer internship program ran by a bank. These banks just have no clue how to run these summer associate programs
Really curious about which EB this was. Assuming even 1/2 of this is true, that's a terrible way to run a summer intern program
