ECM Exits

I received a return offer from my summer internship within the ECM group.  If I don't care about going to PE after 2 years does what group I am in matter?  My goal is to eventually end up in sports business so does what group I work for really matter?  ECM has great hours and the culture was amazing but unsure if it will hurt my chances into sports business.

are they limited if I don't want to go into a finance role after 2 years and more into sports business.

LOL ok everyone shits on ECM and it's funny but in all seriousness, it's not a dead end role. I've seen people parlay ECM into IR, ER, or even lateral out to other groups. It's a better group WLB wise as well-- definitely gets wayyyyy to much hate from prestige obsessed cringe boys (like myself lol)

Would you say that it doesn't matter what group I am in if I want a sports business role then? The hours were really nice this summer knowing that other interns were working a lot more than me

People on this site care way too much about prestige and when they say “exit opps” they are specifically talking about PE/HF and to a lesser extent corp dev or VC.

If you have no desire into exiting one of the fields above, I don’t think being in ECM will hurt you, although it probably won’t help besides having a brand name on your resume (equivalent to FLDP or Big4 or whatever put paid more). You have to remember most careers aren’t linear and people switch all the time. Go look on LinkedIn and see the paths people took to get to whatever roles you are interested within sports business as it’s pretty broad. Probably super helpful if you played a sport in college or have any friends who play on a team who can make an intro.

Fwiw I’m in ecm and it’s not a bad place to be. Get paid the same as coverage bankers for working ~20% less and you almost never have your weekends blown up. True, headhunters don’t reach out directly but if you have a decent network people are always reaching out saying their firm is hiring and if you or anyone you know is interested. You won’t be going to kkr but most of us aren’t anyway.

Honestly sometimes I feel like people ask stupid questions for the sake of asking questions. And it's always around similar themes, exits/prestige/modelling etc. One kid asked a Director once about "WLB" and the Director got annoyed and said "you kids know this is investment banking, right?" It's one of those "non-questions" people ask just to speak.

If you do not care about exits, then why ask about exits? What is the point in that?
