Email Hr department or not?

Waiting for a super day invite from the strategy department of an investment bank (graduate program), where I really want to work. I already did some networking and spoke to the employees of the department, but am worried that it is almost November, and if I wait too long the position may be filled. I have found an HR email for this department, but I am not sure if it is a good idea to ask them about my application because it might hinder my chances. What do you guys think and suggest doing?
