equity value just for relative comparisons?

Hi,

just read that equity value only provides a measure of relative size and that for insight on relative and absolute market performance analysts look at a company's current share price as a percentage of its 52-week high.

Is that really the case? Don't understand why just the latter one would allow for absolute comparisons.
