Evercore Houston Culture

Current analyst and looking at lateral ops at EVR. Any insights on how culture have changed? Talked to a couple of analysts last year and heard nothing positive, average 100 hour weeks, expected to work on Saturdays and PTO, toxic relationship between associates and analysts, no accelerated A2A promotion (current bank is 2 years). The group is materially better and I want to stay in banking long-term. Would appreciate any insights

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the culture at Evercore Houston has been described as challenging and intense. Here are the key insights:

  1. Workload and Hours: Analysts have reported brutal hours, with averages around 100-hour weeks. Working on Saturdays and during PTO seems to be an expectation, which aligns with the "sweaty" culture often mentioned.

  2. Toxic Dynamics: There are recurring mentions of toxic relationships between associates and analysts. Some analysts have shared experiences of disrespectful and demanding behavior from seniors, which contributes to high turnover rates.

  3. Promotions: Evercore Houston does not appear to offer accelerated Analyst-to-Associate (A2A) promotions, unlike some other banks. This could be a consideration if career progression speed is important to you.

  4. Deal Flow and Reputation: Despite the cultural challenges, the group is highly regarded for its deal flow and strong positioning in the energy M&A space. It remains one of the top places to start a career in oil and gas banking, with competitive pay and solid exit opportunities.

  5. Retention Issues: High turnover at the junior level has been noted, with some analysts leaving within months due to the demanding environment.

If you're looking to stay in banking long-term and prioritize deal flow and career development over work-life balance, Evercore Houston could be a strong option. However, be prepared for a tough cultural environment and weigh whether the trade-offs align with your personal and professional goals.

If you are in New York or SF, just get your two year promotion and lateral as an associate to another bank in your city. The analyst program there is notoriously sweaty and grindy and getting stuck with a third year analyst title will be a pretty brutal look this early in your career. They also do not internally transfer you to New York or any other office if that's another factor. Unless you get booted to Toronto of course.
