FAANG Financial Analyst > IBD

Hi All, recently received an offer for Amazon’s financial analyst program. Have internships in B4 Audit, AM, Infra PE and Private Credit (no return offer because of headcount issues) and a MFin from a low/semi target. Is it possible to go to IB from here, if not what exits ops are open to me?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a FAANG financial analyst role to investment banking (IB) is possible but can be challenging. Here are some insights and potential exit opportunities:

Transitioning to IB:

  1. Networking: Leverage your network extensively. Connect with alumni, attend industry events, and use LinkedIn to reach out to professionals in IB.
  2. Skill Alignment: Highlight transferable skills from your FAANG role, such as financial modeling, analysis, and strategic planning.
  3. Certifications and Courses: Consider additional certifications or courses related to IB to strengthen your resume (e.g., CFA, financial modeling courses).
  4. Recruitment Firms: Engage with recruitment firms that specialize in finance roles.

Other Exit Opportunities:

  1. Corporate Development: Many FAANG companies have robust corporate development teams that value financial analysis experience.
  2. Private Equity (PE): Your background in Infra PE and Private Credit can be appealing to PE firms, especially if you can demonstrate relevant skills and experience.
  3. Venture Capital (VC): Similar to PE, VC firms may value your analytical skills and experience in high-growth environments.
  4. Strategic Finance: Roles in strategic finance or FP&A at other tech companies or large corporations.
  5. Consulting: Management consulting firms often seek individuals with strong analytical backgrounds and experience in strategic roles.

Additional Considerations:

  • MBA: Pursuing an MBA from a top-tier school can significantly enhance your chances of breaking into IB or other high-finance roles.
  • Internal Transfers: Explore internal transfer opportunities within Amazon to roles that are more closely aligned with IB, such as corporate development or M&A.

I'm sorry, but it looks like this may be out of my ability to answer... maybe some of the links above might help?

It would be very unlikely in my opinion, unless you go through a top MBA.

Also, you may join different teams that do different things as a financial analyst and that can affect your exits, but generally speaking you can look at roles related to corporate finance and FP&A.

I have interned at Amazon in a Finance team and now joining a BB - PM me if you want, I'd be curious to ask a few questions

For context I’m likely joining the CAPEX team so I’m expecting at least a decent amount of modelling. I’m also based in London but moving to one of Amazon’s European offices so frankly I don’t see the value of a MBA here since recruiting for IBD at the MBA level isn’t structured like it is in the US.

Thank you for your response btw!
