Failed a course after my application - does that affect my offer?

Hi all,

I am a junior and have an offer from a major IB. When I applied for the role, I had a 3.7 gpa and had never failed a course. However, I did fail a course last semester and thus my gpa dropped to 3.5. The professor was terribly boring, I was busy for other upper-level courses and interviewing, and I personally preferred a F to a C on my transcript (but now looking back that wasn't a wise choice). That was a project course and my not finishing 2/5 of the projects gave me a F. Now I've accepted the offer and am asked to upload my current transcript. I did upload my current transcript, but am really worried about that the one failed course would fail me in the background check. I'm retaking the same course this semester, and will probably get an A. Would you suggest me to explain this to my recruiter? Or should I just sit back and wait for the result of background check? Any suggestion is appreciated!

Being a perfectionist I was thinking a F is better than a C, since I can retake it and get an A if I get a F. But is this not the case for IB companies? Would they prefer to see a C to a F?

Retake the course if you can replace the grade, but you're fine for a background check. As long as you were honest when you applied and still remain at a 3.5, HR will not care. If you get to a 3.4 or below you might have issues, make sure your grades are good this semester.

And yes, any company would rather see a C than an F. Failed class implies major lack of effort, a C at least is passing.

I was honest when I applied, but I am afraid that a failed course looks really bad on my transcript. I'm retaking it this semester and am doing rlly well so will probably get an A. Would you suggest me to mention this to HR or wait until they ask me? Thanks!!

Don't mention it. They will 99% not ask because it doesn't affect you meeting the cutoff.

Let it go, take this as a learning experience, and be thankful your GPA is still where it is

Completely understand your logic on retaking the class (my school had the same policy), but that was not a good decision. Not only does an F look terrible, but more importantly why would you want to waste the time and money involved to retake a class? That is a total waste of tuition.

Anyways, my guess would be that you will be fine for the background check. You have a high enough GPA overall and it's not going to stop you from graduating or anything, so they won't care.

haha it was tempting for me to retake it because of the school policy and the professor was bad so that I felt like I was learning nothing. but now I've learned from this experience and won't do this again.. Thanks for your understanding and comments :)

I can agree with you there. A good portion of my college courses have involved learning nothing from professors/lecture. Someday I think school will be all online and professors will be paid much less
