Feeling useless
Hello everyone!
I'm a little bit frustrated.
Briefly about me:
2 months ago I started as an analyst at Equties Sales at top bank in EM country in EE.
My department headcount is fairly small, there are 2 MDs (ex BB) and me.
I have never worked directly such senior persons. So basically to develop and improve I use the followings:
(1) I try to learn as much as I can by shadowing them.
(2) Whenever I feel the right moment, when they are kind of free I ask a bunch of questions regarding deals or products we do.
However, my main concern is that, I can not really DO much, since the most important part is client interraction/selling. I draft pitches whenever it is possible, I review amendments to documentation and express my view, mostrly my comments are re formatting, rarely about substance.
My day:
-40% following the communication (e-mails/conf calls) re deals and keeping systematized notes with details about each transaction
-30% following the newsflow on the markets
-10% drafting pitches
-10% market spreadsheets updates
-10% building internal network (crucial in my type of bank)
So finally, I do not feel that I add value OR in other words I feel useless.
Please, guys advise should I do anything with that or just keep going and I'm just overthinking?
Thank you very much in advance for your input!
If you left, what would be your options?
My concern is not the job itself, I pretty much enjoy everythng, except my perception of adding value, since on my previous jobs I always had a formal/informal mentors who were 1-2 grades more senior than I am, whom I could talk to very deep and understand what should I do to develop, what are my weak points, etc. (which is not the case now)
And to be honest, there are not much well-paid alternatives on the street, ie Big-3 and probably IBD teams in BB. However I am not looking for tons of grunt work and more hours for equal or less pay.
You've been on the job for 2 months, just try to learn what you can and earn their trust (so they can let you make big boy moves).
Also, I don't know why you would pick such a career if you wanted to add value (unless you mean value specifically for your company only).
Thanks for your input!
Just to clarify, yes by adding value I specifically meant my team/company.
You're supporting the MDs in an emerging market.
Be a sponge. Learn everything you can. Help your clients (and your country) emerge. Soon your firm will be adding staff and you'll have gotten in on the ground floor. Profit.
It sounds like you are doing everything right. Your MDs will let you know if you are doing a bad job. Keep it up.
WSO has been very helpful, now i want to contribute back. In short -- 2.5 years after writing this post, i've been promoted to associate and decided to leave. now i'm doing corporate finance at fast-growing fintech.
key takeaways
i believe that within large groups, where you have all chains of classic team structure (MD, VP, associates, analysts), analysts never have nothing to do, on the contrary they are overwhelmed with tasks and they should not have such struggle
