Finding a mentor / ally in your team

I realized I haven't dedicated enough time to finding an ally among the VPs/EDs/MDs in my team, and am falling behind in the political game. I'm talking about strategizing around reviewers, knowing what people say about me and my performance (the unfiltered version), etc. --> things that could impact my ranking. I always thought doing a good job would be enough.

How did you find your ally? I don't watch sports so that's not helping.
