Freshman trying to my foot in the door
Hi everyone!
Well by the title I am a freshman in college and haven't really taken any business or finance classes as I was initially a political science major during the first semester because I thought that would be a good way to get started in corporate law and build on that career. But that wasn't the case whatsoever. So now I am a pre business major and I anticipate to be a Finance major when it comes time for me to declare my major in the business school. What I would like to know is what books do you all recommend I read or maybe ways that I could get some experience as a freshman? I mean summer is around the corner so I'm not sure what I could do to help prepare for my sophomore year. I currently work full time and go to school full time, however I am working in the medical field so it doesn't have any relation to the finance/business field.
Try and get an internship. Are you at a target?
No I am not from a target.
That makes it more difficult, transfer if you can. The standard advice applies, get good grades and network.
I agree with the guy who mentioned transferring. However, besides NYU, I believe that most transfer applications are closed, and stern is basically impossible to transfer to (could try to transfer to Econ, however the program is considered below stern as far as recruiting goes). I would recommend on recruiting during you sophomore year from your current spot, while working on transfer applications for after your sophomore year. If you get an SA great, no need to transfer, if not transfer to a target (most apps close between 2/15 to 3/15) and consider extending graduation by a semester to recruit as a sophomore again. It is crucial you get as close to a 4.0 as possible for transfer with solid extra circulars, and there is a thread with a list of transfer friendly target schools. If you don't want to transfer it is all up to you how hard you network and study technicals during your sophomore year that will determine if you get an offer. In the meantime, if you are located in a area with boutique banks you can try to network for a summer or fall internship. As for books, read Investment Banking by Rosenbaum and go over the breaking into Wall Street guides.
change your username…you don’t want to use your real name. it took me 15 seconds to find you on linkedin
I’d suggest reaching out to ppl in the industry and figuring out if it’s something you really want to do. Also apply to any women/diversity Programs if those are applicable to you
P.S change you WSO name to something more anonymous
just stay away from the lawnmower
I don't know what you mean by that?
from a tv show. Nothing actually meaningful
don't throw your college career away just to get an elusive IB position. you're in college for a reason so don't wish it away to work full time. speaking from a non target who has a SA at a BB, you will be fine at whatever place you're at if you surround yourself with high achieving people who know others in the industry, and you're personable.
Oh no yeah I definitely agree with you. However in my case I have to work full time and go to school full time to help out my parents but yeah I just want to increase my chances in anyway to just make it to a good company yk?
