Freshman Year Internship

I am going to a school that offers a freshman study abroad program with a 6 week internship. I am ultimately interested in going to HF or PE, but know I need to start in IB. I have received my internship and am looking for some advice/opinion. Based on my preferences how does an internship at Barclays Plc look? The thing is I got placed in risk management (IRM). For somebody interested in sales and trading and the stock market, would this be the best internship? Is the fact that I am working at Barclays freshman year look good, and is IRM something I should stick with or try and change? Just wondering how this looks

It will look very very good for a freshman. Risk management is a solid middle office career within itself and undoubtedly a great launching pad- especially as a freshman. Although it is risk for the market side and not IB risk, still you are at an advantage. Most kids turn crappy Merrill lynch or UBS wealth management or F500 corporate finance sophomore year internships into junior year IBD internships.

Thanks, so it would look really good even though it doesnt deal with equity research and the stock market which is what I really want to do. any other opinions and here is the job description

IRM takes a business-focussed view of information assets held by the Bank, whether they are held in electronic or other forms. It aims to integrate people, processes and technology through use of risk management principles to safeguard the integrity, availability and confidentiality of information in accordance with the Bank‚s operating model and risk appetite. This is achieved either directly or through partnerships with related disciplines, e.g. Business Unit information risk and security teams, Legal & Compliance, Risk etc.

As a freshman, it ought to be tremendously beneficial. Not only will you get solid exposure in a middle office role at such a young age, but it'll serve as a launching board to better positions later. There's no reason to be anything other than happy right now.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.
