future options for lateraling

I was just curious about the potential to lateral from commercial banking to IBD, PE, VC, HF, etc. I'm contemplating on taking a position as a debt analyst in middle market banking for a major national bank (think JPM, Citi, BofA). They tend to work closely with the IBD of the bank and help to support their deals. It's a rotational training program with emphasis in treasury management, foreign exchange, syndications, derivatives and other product partners.

Would these tools/skills help in lateraling to any of the industries listed above?

If you're referring to joining DCM at one of the banks, it would definately be a step in the right direction towards moving into IBD ... however, make sure it is a front-office role where you will actually be pricing debt placements, or whatever derivative instruments are being used on ibd sponsored deals ... also try and end up in the group that gets the most exposure to ibd after your rotational program, and have a preference for a group that does dcm work for the bank's larger deals and not mm if you can
