Goldman Global Investment Research
I am currently a junior in college getting ready for the recruiting season. I am looking at applying to Goldman, and I thought for a long time I would apple to the IBD, but now I am considering the Global Investment Research division to do equity research. My question is: if I do an internship with equity research, how hard would it be to get a FT in the IBD (if that was something I wanted to do)?
GIR is closer to S&T than IBD. Depends where you want to take your career bro. If you go to a Target school I would say take the shortest route, though in my case, I don't and had to take an alternative route.
I do go to a Target school. The thing is I think I can be happy with both, and I like both. I have a hunch however that I may like ER a bit more, which is why I want to apply there. My question is if I end up NOT liking it as much as I thought, how easy would it be for me to go to investment banking? I mean, I know that I could still apply for FT like everyone else, but would I have a leg up given the fact that I worked there already?
ER would be arguably the most likely to help you move to IBD from SA to FT recruiting within a BB bank. As long as you've gotten an offer and expressed your interest, it's in their best interest to keep someone who has an offer and likes/knows the firm within the firm, so you may find you have the opportunity to interview for another division at the end of the summer. HR, or in this case HCM would help set you up before your offer explosion date so you can find out if another division will hire you and still have your original return offer if not.
Let me bump this, because I think maybe I didn't phrase my question correctly. Let me try again: If I do an internship in Equity Research for my junior year, and then decide to apply FT to IBD, is it like reapplying all over again? Or, do I have a certain advantage and will it be easier for me to get into IBD than if I hadn't worked there before?
It would be easier because you already have contacts within the firm, they are interested in keeping you around if you got the offer, and you probably networked with a few people in your target division over the summer.
