Goldman Sachs Dilemma

Ok, so GS have hired and hires sophomores. Even their HR said they hire sophomores. But the problem is, the analysts and associates on the recruiting team doesn't know that and believe that they don't hire sophomores.

How do I get them to look at my candidacy?

You tell them that you spoke with an HR rep and they verified that GS takes sophomores. Provide the exact name of the HR rep and say something along the lines of "I spoke with X and she told me the GS hires loads of sophomores"

one of my buddies just got an offer (yes already) for goldman's program as a sophomore. he said it is not really a formal program, or is there a formal application process - there is an app online it is just a black hole. the reason he got it is because goldman basically hands offers to us on a silver platter because we are on a varsity sport at a solid school.

the only way you can get an offer with goldman as a sophomore is to have internal connections and go to a target school. enough said

^^I have seen non-targets sophomores get in without connections (usually though some organization like SEO), but I would say that they are the exception rather than the rule.

It's real tough I must tell you -- if you can snag a sophomore spot, kuddos to you. I had a buddy that worked there and he said that most groups get around 1 sophomore per 10 interns. There are some that will do better, some worse, but in general I would expect for there to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 total sophomores in the country that get the spot.

Still, you are competing with less people so if you really know what you are doing... it could benefit you.

One thing you DEFINITELY want to consider is the 1-week internship that Goldman offers for sophomore candidates. It is competitive to get into the program, but if you do well I know that they extend offers directly from the pool... so it is an easy in. Best of luck mate.
