Graduating after Starting FT at BB

I'm currently a postgraduate student on a 1 year master's programme in London and recently received an offer to start full time at a BB in September.

I expected to graduate this September (that's also what my CV said) but due to personal circumstances now won't be able to finish my dissertation by August. While I'm going to finish the dissertation by September (before the FT starting date), I will have to defer submission to January 2022. Will this cause any issues? Should I tell the BB? And how to deal with pre-start and post-start background checks?

It should not be an issue unless you need a visa.

The uni will not be able to confirm you have graduated for your background checks but this is common for post-grad. Although the academic year finishes in September, some London unis confirm your classification in November and send out transcripts in December. I think visa applications require you to provide transcripts.

Then you are fine. Just make sure you put January as your graduation date.

Never got an issue with that, though one of the background check companies flagged it to HR. When asked by HR I explained the reason. HR only cared about attendance, not the graduation date.

Thank you very much for your help!

Also, I just realized that while I can submit my dissertation in January, I can only officially be awarded my degree by Feb/Mar.

So, at what stage do you recommend putting Feb/Mar as my new graduation date? Tell HR after signing the offer and before I start the background check? Should I tell HR at all? I fear that by telling HR things sound more serious than they actually are... It's not like I have to work on anything university related. During my interviews, I was also only asked as to when I can start working and if I'll finish classes before commencing work, not necessarily when I graduate.

I should also mention that this was a lateral position, not a traditional graduate FT role.

EDIT: You are probably overthinking this, they chose you for the job and this is minutiae. Sign the contract first, then let know HR when it comes to filling in the background check form that you have been informed you will be graduating at a later date for the he reasons you mentioned.

I would put the real graduation date if asked in the form and only inform HR about it if they ask a question. Analysts sometimes start in early June and and have not yet graduated by that time. Background checks are mostly about criminal records, employers references and qualifications that you have put on your CV. HR probably won't care about that detail and the uni will confirm you have studied and are awaiting your results in January next year. That's what happened with mine.
