Strictly speaking, location can often determine group. If you work a JPM Delaware you likely aren't going to be doing FO M&A stuff. In a situation where you have to choose between say...an MM in NYC and a BB in NYC, the BB may be the best choice simply because when you're junior, brand name counts. Group also matters in that some are know to be sweatshops (BMO M&M) whilst others may be a bit more chilled.

You can't really rank them because they all matter for different reasons. Some locations also won't have all the necessary groups. If you want to go to an energy PE fund then perhaps somewhere in Texas working in the O&G group may be best. Is it more "prestigious" than NYC? No. But it's your best bet to get into energy PE.
