Depends on the two groups. Might be better to take the bird in hand though, but if you can tell me what the two groups are I may be able to help you more.
Find someone you’re close to in group 1 and explain your situation and see if they can make a decision sooner or possibly put you in touch with staffer. Group placement is a two way street and group 1 should be understanding given it’s in everyone’s best interest to be transparent. If group 1 can’t give you a decision, definitely go with group 2. You don’t want to end up being placed in the worst group if group 1 decides not to pick you (fairly likely scenario unless a different group ranks you top).
