Group Placement Insight

Good evening. I want to inquire about how the group placement works at large banks. I am an incoming IBD analyst for FT starting next July and was told by HR I have "Placement" in April. I will be meeting with groups and they will rank me and I will do the same.

What are general things to keep in mind? General trends in the vertical I want, past deals of the group, etc. Is it more conversional and behavioral based? If my placement is in April when I meet the team is it weird to do networking calls with them in like Feb/Jan to get my name out there? Any advice appreciated.

It is not weird to do networking calls before placement day and is encouraged for the more competitive groups at your bank. You should do some research to get a sense of what groups are popular at your bank and if those groups are also your top choices then you should start outreach before April. Either way it doesn't hurt to network and I would still reach out before placement to get your name recognized.

Thank you so much for the response. Do you have any tips/advice for these networking calls that I take prior to the placement stage? Obviously I will treat it like a normal conversation and talk about my interests and things, but is it appropriate to ask about the hours, how deal flow is, where I expect to see the group headed in the future, etc? Cheers.
