GS FIG?
Currently at an EB and while pay is kinda nice, I'm not sure how good is the career trajectory for someone who wants to stick out to IB beyond the junior years + in my vertical top BBs are simply stronger.
Considering lateralling to GS FIG (FTAM vertical) as I've been in touch with some seniors there. Anyone has recent insights on culture etc? I've heard mixed reviews but so far have had really good convos with the team there
Appreciate any color here!
GS FIG is paradise
lmao that group is filled with Asian beckies at the associate level
exactly, GS FIG is paradise
Depends on what you are solving for. I made a move with a similar rationale a couple of years ago, albeit from a lower-ranked BB to a top BB (GS/MS) while also considering a competing offer from an EB. While the pay seemed enticing, I ultimately went with the top BB and don't regret it for a minute.
The opportunities & network a top group at a place like GS or MS can give you is unmatched, especially as you progress in your roles. If I were an analyst who exits in 2 years, then I would probably be more indifferent, but once you hit your mid-level/senior years, the brand a top BB can provide is frankly superior.
How is the lifestyle at your EB and how do you think it compares to that of GS?
Hours are awful TBH. Nothing toxic but I feel you're pulling 3ams regardless of whether you're on a live deal or a pitch. Overall, the motive for the move would be to get better exposure, upward mobility, deal quality - I realize GS FIG is not a lifestyle group haha
Makes sense. Those hours are brutal for a senior associate. I’d be curious to hear how GS compares.
This forum glazes over EBs but IMO for specific sectors, it makes no sense to pick an EB over a top BB.
For FIG for eg, as you pointed out, GS/JPM/MS have much better FIG/FinTech platforms vs any EB. Similarly, if you're into tech IB, no point in going to any non-Q EB vs GS TMT or MS MP, they are far better.
I'm at one of MOE/LAZ/PWP and the overall exposure you get at a strong BB group is better.
I think it really depends on where you have a path to a senior level position. Everyone is different. Some people have a better fit at an EB, MM, lower BB or top BB. Really depends.
A very important aspect of getting promoted to a senior level position is senior sponsorship and mentorship. If senior GS guys are recruiting you and they can positively assure you that you have a path to Partner / MD / group head or CEO or whatever, then makes sense to do it. Good luck
