GS is not open about internal moves. They say they are but they are liars. The moment that you tell your group that you want to switch you will get dinged. Obviously, there had been situations where people have been able to move but it’s too much of a risk.

Not my personal experience. My group has a handful of people who moved internally. Ops, GSAM, and clearly ppl who summered in other groups. HR and people understand that as a sophomore/junior who has only ever touched the field at arms length you couldn't possibly fully understand what group you are truly passionate about. Where you are dinged is if you profess this huge love for say NR or RE (which for lack of better words, are two of the "less" popular groups), and then suddenly you want to join TMT or HC or CRG then sure that could be suspicious. However, if you are genuinely agnostic at first or made it clear you are choosing groups based off of fit and culture rather than industry preference, it's a lot easier to explain why you would want to move to a completely different vertical. Certainly a tight rope to walk but not impossible.

I think that’s confirmation bias. You’re never going to see a person that wanted to lateral and not being allowed to lateral. It’s like saying “what do you mean! Everyone in my group got the group we wanted!” Like I said, some people are able to make the switch. Maybe they had a good manager and supported them through the process. But personally, I wanted to make the switch between divisions and my manager got immediately sour for the rest of the summer. You can even read the other threads and comments about internal mobility at GS. For my summer, you waived your potential return offer for the opportunity to just apply for the internal transfer.

^agree. went through SD last summer for NY IBD, didn't get it but friends who did got group specific offer (usually the group is with the interviewer you mesh the best with) and you take it or not. when you get the SD invite HR asks which groups you would rank/only take an offer from or if you're flexible.
