As far as networking with other groups, you should be given a list of contacts in each group. Don't be shy when reaching out to them and make sure to ask for the contact info of the analysts in the group you're interested in. Not only will you get a better idea of what the group is actually like, but the analysts have a disproportionate amount of sway in the placement process (at least in my experience). Put yourself out there and make a good impression and you should be able to find a group with a mutual fit.
I had concerns about the classics or financing situation as well, so I called the recruiter to clarify.
Not sure if it's different for targets vs. non-targets, but she said generalist offers for sophomores include classics and financing and for juniors a generalist offer is exclusive to classic groups
