GS IBD "Strategic Relationship Management"
Scoured search function but found nothing...
Can anybody shed light on GS's "Strategic Relationship Management?" Being interviewed for FT position. Assumed it was not a great gig because it's not traditional IBD and seems like marketing. But when I found a job listing online, it mentioned as requirements things like "1-2 years experience" and "M&A modeling."
Basically I'm confused. I THINK it's a bad way to start a career and I'm better off with a traditional IBD role at a less-reputable firm. But I don't know what this IS, don't know if it's prestigious, don't know if I'll learn a lot, and don't know if it pays well, and asking these questions (except pay) of interviewers and HR people yield evasive, generic answers. Can anybody help?
Im kind of curious to hear what is too
sounds really interesting. I'd love to find out as well
it's barely front office, no modeling, no valuation. it's not IBD, and if you ask carefully, GS doesn't even claim its IBD.
Thanks for the honesty. Much appreciated.
Does anyone know more about this group? ( apparently it comes under IBD.. but I dont really know what to expect - have an interview coming up)
easy but not interesting or skill building. can do this for 2 years and then do GS mobility into IBD and get exit opps from there.
Actually SRM IS a part of GS IBD. PM me for more info
I'm looking at their summer analyst position. Can anyone tell me more about the day-to-day tasks they undertake? Is it actual investment banking? Any interview experiences? @goodguygreg - thanks! messaged you.
I know a MD there quite well. It was described to me essentially as a liaison between the various banking groups and PWM. For example, GS might be running an IPO where the founder is going to end up wealthy and will need PWM services. The relationship management group would recognize that need and help to get the PWM guys in front of the founder in an attempt to win the business. So basically a middle man and probably not an ideal analyst role, although maybe cool for more senior people. Again, could be off base but that is how it was described to me.
If it's a PWM interface role, all you'll learn is how to get a bullet point list/slide deck from the IB team who knows their stuff and hand it to some PWM relationship banker who needs to be tightly scripted because he knows fuck all.
Exit ops likely to be pretty limited, even within GS, if not moreso within GS as they know you're just a pre-scripted salesman who pushes product down the throat of accounts.
Sounds like you'd be better off at a lesser name in a team where you can develop technical skills.
Can only second this. Especially in today's finance job market developing a solid technical base is key for long-term success. Would avoid relationship focused roles as a junior.
Thanks for all the info. SSits - would you say the same even if its a summer analyst role? - can you join full time in another division?
I've never worked at GS, so don't have enough experience to make even an educated guess. Same disclaimer applies to my first comment.
