Has anyone successfully moved from MBB to BB/EB in their first year?

Just started at MBB full-time in SF/NYC and I want to move to IB because I realized I enjoy IB work more and it's more aligned with my long-term goals. Does anyone have insight on the MBB to IB lateral market and what the timeline typically looks like?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from MBB to BB/EB in your first year is possible, but it requires a strategic approach. While there isn't specific data in the context about MBB-to-IB transitions in the first year, here are some general insights on lateraling into BB/EB roles:

  1. Networking is Key: Start building relationships with analysts and associates at the BB/EB firms you're targeting. This will help you understand the culture and hiring needs of the firms.

  2. Timing: Most lateral moves in IB happen after 6-12 months in your current role. This aligns with when firms typically have openings due to attrition.

  3. Preparation: Be ready to demonstrate strong technical skills, even if your background is in consulting. Interviews will likely include technical questions, behavioral questions (e.g., "Why IB?"), and possibly a modeling test.

  4. Storytelling: Craft a compelling narrative about why you're making the switch. Highlight your interest in IB, your transferable skills from MBB (e.g., client management, problem-solving), and how IB aligns with your long-term goals.

  5. Market Dynamics: The lateral market can be competitive, especially for BB/EB roles. Openings often arise unexpectedly, so staying proactive and prepared is crucial.

If you're serious about the move, start networking immediately and focus on refining your technical skills to ensure you're ready when opportunities arise.
