I've actually never gotten a job through a headhunter. Every role I've landed has come through either a direct application or my own network, and that's been true over multiple years of recruiting.
In my experience, HH incentives are rarely perfectly aligned with the candidate's. A lot of the roles I've been sent have either been below market, unusually niche, or simply worse fits than opportunities I've sourced myself.
I've also found that many HHs don't understand the nuances of the industry or your background particularly well, but will still try to heavily frame your profile to the client. Because of that, I'd be careful about how much latitude you give them in describing your motivations or experience. Sometimes what gets communicated isn't quite what you meant, and it can end up positioning you less favorably than if you had explained it yourself.
Does this apply to how you got your PE role as well? Thought headhunters were basically mandatory for on cycle
