Help! Lateraling too often?
Just finished ~11 months in my first IB analyst stint, upgraded to a diff company (BB, also analyst and will be starting in a month). The issue is that I’ve never really wanted to stay in IB for more than 1.6 / 2 years (Max!) When on cycle picks up, I would be happy to jump to jobs that start ASAP or in December/Jan. Would it be a horrible look to have worked at two banks as an analyst for less than a year each?
not trying to stay in banking and at the end I would have 1.5 years of overall experience at least. Thoughts??
It depends on how you're laterling. Latering from DB to JPM to MS or UBS to Citi to BAML might be viewed as weird since the benefits for lateraling aren't really tangible excuses. Most BBs pay the same, culture is group dependent, and if you're a good analyst the exits are the same across the board. If you jump from let's say Raymond James/WB/WF to a BB then to EB/industry focused boutique, you can craft a story as to why you did it and talk about the experiences and skills gained at each stop.
What about if it was like DB to BAML but then you only stayed at BAML for ~6m to round oht a total of 1.5 years in IB or 8m to April of second year? Is that horrible? Do laterals usually stay a full year or two years (after ~1 year or less of Prior experience?)
